Newly built Feni district jail boasts better facilities

The newly constructed Feni district jail building has strengthened its security arrangement while providing all sorts of modern facilities. The new jail is located in Ranirhat area of Feni sadar.

Fariuddin Ahmed Chowdhury, secretary of the home ministry (service and security), told The Independent that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the jail this month through video conference.

Md Wahiduzzaman, the deputy commissioner of Feni, said that construction of the new jail building is complete and hopefully the long-standing problem of over-crowding would be resolved.

The installation of closed-circuit (CC) camera has added improved surveillance capabilities in the new jail. CC camera with modern announcement systems is expected to bring tangible improvement in the internal monitoring system. The jail has a capacity to maintain more than  350 prisoners at a time under the home ministry jail building construction project . Rafiqul Quader, the district jail superintendent, told The Independent that the construction of the new jail building, equipped with modern tools and accessories, at a cost of Tk. 39 crore, has ensured full-fledged security arrangement in the prison.

The new jail premises also has a two-storied hospital, counseling ward, prisoner creative jobs work-shade, playground, ponds, horticultural section, and staff quarters . The jail has both male and female prisoner wards.

The executive engineer of PWD, Kazi Badruzzaman, told The Independent that facilities have been built for various officials including male and female barracks. With the new financial allotment from the government, the district jail authority is now in a better position to supply better food and medical services to the prisoners. Also, better facilities have been  provided for offering prayers in the mosque, and for games and studies.

In 1915, the first district jail was built at Masterpara on 1.2 acres of land. At that time, it could house two female and 170 male inmates.
