‘Char’ people get river ambulance from PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has gifted a river ambulance with emergency facilities to the char people of Chandpur Sadar so that serious patients could be carried to the 250-bed Chandpur General Hospital. On last Sunday, the Prime Minister formally handed the ambulance over to Dr Dipu Moni, the local lawmaker, in Dhaka.

On Monday last,  Dipu Moni handed it over to the chief medical officer of Chandpur Sadar upazila health complex, Dr Shafiqul Islam, who reached Chandpur on the afternoon of the same day.

Talking to this correspondent, Dr Sahfiqul Islam said: "Dipu Moni has fulfilled a longstanding demand of the char people."

"There is a trained driver for running the river ambulance, which has modern facilities to help serious patients  with essential drugs and oxygen," he added.  "The government has allocated funds for fuel for this ambulance to operate it  properly and easily," he added.

Dr Sahfiqul Islam said that the char people of Haimchar upazila could avail the facilities pertaining to the ambulance by paying a nominal charge fixed by the government.

Md Shafiullah Sarker, the headmaster of Omar Ali High School located in a remote char under Chandpur Sadar, told this correspondent that "the government has fulfilled the longstanding demand of the people of char areas."

He urged the Prime Minister to appoint an expert/specialist doctor and a nurse for serious patients carried by the ambulance.
