Terrorist jailed for possessing arms in Chattogram

A court in Chattogram on Wednesday sentenced a man to ten years rigorous imprisonment for possessing arms in seven years back.

The court of 3rd Additional District and Session Judge Munshi Abdul Majid pronounced the verdict.

According to the prosecution, Raozan thana police on a tip-off detained Bidhan Barua in a case in 2011.

After his confessional statement, police recovered a G3-rifle from the residence of one Sujit Barua at Adharmanik village of the upazila on September 9 in 2011.

Raozan thana police filed a case against the alleged arms trader on September 15, 2011.

Police submitted charge-sheet against him on October 13, 2011. After examining a total of nine out of 14, prosecution witnesses, the court passed the verdict in presence of the convict.

2 held with fake cigarettes   

Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested two members of a fake cigarette making syndicate from Gazipur on early Wednesday.

The arrestees are-Md Morshed, 47, and Md Monir, 40.

A team of CID, led by its Demra Unit senior ASP Iqbal Hossain, conducted a drive at a godown in hondona crossing and arrested Morshed.

The specialised anti-crime unit seized 500 cartons containing fake cigarettes of various brands of cigarettes, including Gold Leaf, Star, Derly, Derody and Sholer worth around Tk 4.20 lakh from the godown, said ASP Iqbal.

Based on his statement, the CID team arrested Monir from Tongi area on Wednesday afternoon, he said.

During preliminary interrogation, the arrestees revealed that they were involved in marketing fake cigarettes for a long time evading Vat and Tax, he added.

IDEB confce begins tomorrow

The 22st National Conference of Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh (IDEB) will be held on September 15-17 in the capital.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to inaugurate the conference at her official residence Gonobhaban at 10 am on September 15.

She will also inaugurate Bangabandhu sculpture and IDEB’s building extension work, a press release said.

About 6,000 people, including teachers, students and engineers, will participate in the three-day meet.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister and Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader will inaugurate the 41st Council Convention and Engineering Innovation Expo-2018 at IDEB Building, Kakrail, on September 16.

Seminar on ‘Madrid Protocol Accession’ Sunday

Department of Patent, Design and Trademark and Bangladesh IP Forum are jointly organising a roundtable seminar on Madrid Protocol Accession will be held on Sunday at the Hemonto Hall, Six Seasons Hotel at Gulshan in the capital.  

Ms. Debbie Roenning, Director, Madrid Legal Division, WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organisation) will be the premiere discussant, and Md. Sanowar Hossain, additional secretary and registrar of DPDT will  preside over the roundtable seminar. Representatives from relevant ministries, government stakeholders, trade bodies and private sector shall also join the seminar.

Workshop on pulse crops opens at BARI

A two day long 2nd  international review and planning workshop on pulse crops was inaugurated at the seminar room of Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute in Gazipur on Wednesday. The workshop was organised under the project of “Enhancing Food Nutritional Security and Improved Livelihoods Through Intensification of Rice-Fallow System with Pulse Crops in South Asia (Bangladesh, India & Nepal)”  in order to ensure the nutritional demand by producing pulses in the fallen land after aman paddy in Bangladesh, India and Nepal. The four years long  project  is emplementing financed by IFAD-ICARDA.
