Bahrain women’s under-16 football team arrived first in Bangladesh yesterday to play the upcoming AFC Under-16 Women’s Championship, three days before the outset of the meet.

The tourists were greeted with bouquets after their arrival at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital. The matches of Group-F of the Championship will begin at the Birshrestha Shaheed Sepoy Mostafa Kamal Stadium at Kamalapur from Saturday.

Participating other foreign teams will follow them who all will be accommodated to the local hotels.

Group-F consists of United Arab Emirates (UAE), Vietnam, Lebanon, Bahrain and the hosts Bangladesh, who all will compete to be group champions because each group champions along with two best runners-up will progress to the next round.

Asia Football Confederation (AFC), the football apex body in Asia, brought changes in format owing to an increase of the number of teams.  Only group champions would promote to the final round of the meet in the previous editions. But this time teams have to cross the hurdle of the two rounds to reach the final round, which will be hosted by Thailand.

The second round will be taken place with the participation of the eight teams-each group champions along with two best runners-up. A total of four teams will cruise to the final round.

North Korea, South Korea, Japan and the hosts Thailand will directly play in the championship-deciding phase.

Bangladesh will start their Group-F campaign against Bahrain on September 17. The home side will compete against Lebanon on September 19. They will fight against UAE and Vietnam on September 21 and 23 respectively.
