Cigarettes worth Tk 2.5cr seized

Ten lakh sticks of contraband foreign estimated to be worth about Taka 2.5 crore were seized from Shahjalal International Airport in the capital on Monday midnight.

“We seized 5000 cartons containing 10 lakh shalaka (sticks) of contraband foreign cigarette mond and 303 brands from Cargo Customs area of the airport on Monday midnight,” director general (DG) of customs intelligence Dr Md Shahidul Islam told BSS yesterday.

The estimated value of the seized cigarette along with its 450 per cent tax is Taka 2.5 crore, he also said.

Legal action was taken to this end.

Fire breaks out at tyre factory

A fire broke out at a tyre factory at Dapa Idrakpur in Fatulla on Wednesday morning.

Manjur Quader, officer-in-charge of Fatullah Police Station, said the fire broke out at the factory around 8:30 am and spread soon.

On information, eight firefighting units rushed in and were trying to bring the fire under control.

Police suspected that fire might have originated from the chemical godown inside the factory.

Water transport gets online service

Like all government entities, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority has started an online service to get survey certificates of their water transports.

All activities of the water department including recruitment test applications, admit cards, fees submission, digital competency certificates, verifications, registrations, offering SID will be available online, said a press release of the department.

Water vessels owners can register their vehicles through visiting the website www.dos.gov.bd where they will find an option for ‘Online Application’ on scroll bar of the page.

The subscriber will get message notification after his/her registration process will be done and also get survey certificate online.

College boy missing in sea beach

A college student went missing in the bay at Patenga sea beach in the port city on Tuesday.

The missing was identified as Asif Shahriar, son of Md Barekul Islam, resident of Dulahazara village in Chokoria upazila of Cox’s Bazar district and class-XI student of Naval Forces School and College in Patenga.

Officer-in-charge of Patenga Police Station Abul Kashem Bhuiya said Asif along with his mate Nafis disappeared in the bay after they got down in the bay water skipping their college around 11pm.
