5.3 magnitude earthquake hits Bangladesh

A 5.3 magnitude earthquake shook the capital and other parts of the country yesterday. The epicentre of the earthquake to Saptagram, Assam, India, 293 kilometres north of BMD Seismic Centre at Agargaon, said Mominul Islam, a meteorologist of Dhaka met office, reports UNB.

The tremor was felt at 10:50 am, he added. However, the US Geological Survey traced the epicentre of the quake to  9 kilometres away from Saptagram.

They measured the intensity of the earthquake at 5.6 magnitude.

According to the scale of seismologists, an earthquake ranging from 5 to 5.9 is considered a moderate earthquake which can cause slight damage to buildings.

UNB Nilphamari correspondent reported that at least 25 people were injured while getting down from several buildings in Uttar EPZ (Export Processing Zone) area of Sadar upazila in the morning .
