Cabinet body okays proposal to buy arms, ammo for Ansar, VDP

The cabinet committee on purchase has approved a proposal of procuring of 30,000 12-bore shotguns and 3,000,000 cartridges for the Ansar and VDP.

The committee meeting was held at the secretariat with finance minister in the chair yesterday.

According to the proposal, the Ansar and VDP will procure the arms and ammunitions from Bangladesh Machine Tools Factory Limited (BMTF), a state-owned enterprise run by the Bangladesh Army under the direct procurement method (DPM).

The Ansar and VDP, a paramilitary auxiliary force responsible for the preservation of internal security and law enforcement, will use the arms and ammunitions to guard polling centres during the next parliamentary elections, scheduled to be held in December this year.

It will need of Tk 147.48 crore for procuring the quantities of arms and the ammunitions for the force, the proposal added.
