Even though two years have passed that Akter Jahan Joly, 45, associate professor of mass communication and journalism department of Rajshahi University (RU) was found dead inside her campus quarters, no one has been arrested yet in this connection. Though Rajshahi University teacher Atikur Rahman Raja, was arrested last year in a case filed over provoking Akter Jahan Joly to commit suicide, but was released from jail on bail.

Students and teachers of the department at a mourning programme yesterday alleged that Joly did not commit suicide, rather she was killed. They sought punishment of the killers and immediate publication of the investigation report.

They also brought out a silent rally on the campus. Professor Dr Dulal Chandra Biswas, Prof  Pradip Kumar Pandey, Prof Dr Khademul Islam, Associate Prof Moshiur Rahman, among others, addressed the programmme presided over by Chairman of the department Abdullah Al Mamun.

However, on  September 10, police submitted a charge sheet accusing her colleague Atiqur Rahman, assistant professor of the mass communication and journalism department.

Investigation Officer of the case and also Sub-Inspector of Motihar Police Station Brozogopal said that the investigation report was sent to metropolitan magistrate court and is now waiting for hearing on September 27.

Lawyer of the case Advocate Hasan Rijvi alleged that police did not follow proper procedure in the case.

However, Investigation Officer Brozogopal said according to police investigation assistant professor Atiqur was accused in the case.

“But we so far have not find any direct involvement of Prof Tanveer Ahmed, Joly’s ex-husband and also teacher of the same department”, he said.

Earlier on September 9, police found Joly dead inside her Juberi Bhaban room on the campus. Forensic experts later confirmed her death from taking poison. Joly's brother Kamrul Hasan filed the suicide provocation case with Motihar Police Station accusing unknown persons.
