Theatre Circle to stage
‘Nakshi Kanthar Math’ today

Theatre Circle, Munshiganj will stage its much-acclaimed production ‘Nakshi Kanthar Math’ today at the Studio Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) in the Segun Bagicha of the capital.

‘Nakshi Kanthar Math’, a masterpiece by Poet Jasimuddin, gives a crystal clear image of eternal rural Bengal through simple yet classic verses. Based on the folk epic, many productions, including dance-drama, play and more, have already been crafted by many theatre troupes and organizations in Bangladesh.

Dramatized and directed by Shishir Rahman, the story of Nakshi Kanthar Math (The Field of Embroidered Quilt) centers round the couple, Rupai and Saju. Rupai, a young farmer, falls in love with Saju, a girl in his neighbouring village. They are married. Suddenly, after a quarrel with some villagers, Rupai leaves home. Saju becomes alone and waits every day for her husband and begins to make a nakshi kantha (embroidered quilt), where she stitches all the incidents and tragedies of her life. Days pass, but Rupai does not return. Finally, Saju dies and before her death, she requests her mother to put the quilt on her grave.

To note, ‘Nakshi Kanthar Math’ is a dramatised version of the verse written by Jasimuddin, a famous poet of Bangla literature. Many of Jasimuddin’s significant works portrayed the rural life of Bengal in a simple yet artistic fashion. That is why he is known as ‘Polli Kobi’ (Folk Poet).
