Woman killed in elephant attack in Ctg

An elderly woman was trampled to death while another injured by a wild elephant at Rajmura in Banskhali upazila in Chattogram yesterday. The deceased was identified as Mariam Khatun, 60, wife of Siddique Ahmed of the area.

A wild elephant attacked a Mariam and Shafiqul Islam, son of Abdul Kuddus of Natun Para area, yesterday morning, leaving them injured, said Sub-inspector Jahirul Islam Bhuiyan of Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) police outpost. The injured were taken to CMCH where the duty doctor declared the woman dead, he added.

Army man crushed under train

An army person was crushed under the wheels of a train at a level crossing near Banani Rail Station in the capital’s Cantonment area yesterday.

The deceased was identified as Corporal Abdur Razzak.

Yeasin Faruk, officer-in-charge of Kamalapur Railway Police Station, said the accident took place around 7:40 am when a train hit him, leaving him dead on the spot.

Pedestrian hit by bus, dies

A male pedestrian was killed as a passenger bus of Ilisha Paribahan hit him at Jatrabari crossing in the capital yesterday evening.

Police quoting witnesses said the incident took place at around 8pm when the Ilisha Paribahan bus hit him while he was crossing the Jatrabari intersection, said Officer-in-Charge of Jatrabari police station Kazi Wajed Ali. The man, aged around 30, was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where he was declared dead.

The bus driver, Yousuf Ali, along with the bus was detained by the Jatrabari thana police. The body of the unidentified man was kept at the DMCH morgue for postmortem.

Saifur Rahman’s  death anniversary observed

The ninth death anniversary of M Saifur Rahman, the country’s ex-finance minister, was observed on Wednesday with various programmes.

Leaders and activists of local BNP and different socio-political organisations paid homage to Saifur by placing wreaths at his grave on the occasion. Various programmes, including milad mahfil, Qurankhwani and distribution of cooked food, arranged by local BNP and Durre Samad Rahman and Saifur Rahman Foundation were held marking the death anniversary of the late BNP leader.

On September 5, 2009, Saifur, also a former BNP standing committee member, died in a road accident on Dhaka-Sylhet highway at the age of 77.

Fish trader shot dead in Khulna

A fish trader was shot to death and another person injured by unidentified miscreants in Rupsa Ghat of Khulna city on Wednesday night.

The deceased was identified as Farhan Sumon, 30, son of Mujibur Rahman of Natun Bazar of the city.

Witnesses said a group of assailants opened fire on Sumon around 9 pm, leaving him critically injured.

Bystander Alamin was also injured as he was hit by a stray bullet. Locals took the duo to Khulna Medical College Hospital where the duty doctor declared Sumon dead around 9:30 pm. The murder might have taken place over establishing supremacy in the locality, said Humayun Kabir, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station.

Training for 2,000 school dropouts in Rajshahi

More than 2,000 school dropouts, including 1,120 girls and 30 transgender, were given technical skill development training for making them worthy citizens in Rajshahi city. BRAC, an international development organisation based in Bangladesh, under its ‘Skill Development Programme’ provided the training on different need-based trades and facilitated their post-training job scopes.

The information was disclosed at a view-sharing meeting with Brac fieldworkers at its learning and resource centre in Rajshahi city on Wednesday.
