Bizzare protest

Panchagarh: Failing to register a case with police after coming under physical assault, a young man threatened to commit suicide by swallowing poison in the district town on Wednesday, reports UNB. Sabuj Alam, 22, staged a hunger strike in front of the district press club, holding what was believed to be a bottle of poison in one hand and some posters attached to his body between 9am and noon. A crowd also gathered around him.

The poster attached to his body contained slogans such as ‘I must die due to the negligence of police administration’, and ‘I do not want mercy, I want justice’. Later, a team of police of Panchgarh Sadar Police Station headed by SI Shahinuzzaman brought him to the police station. Shabuj Alam claimed three people-Manna, 20, Mahbub, 24, Shafiqul,45- physically attacked him and his father following a land dispute on August 31. Later on September 2, Shabuj along with his father Khairul Alam went to Atwari Police Station but police refused to file a case against the said charges.

Shabuj also claimed SI Zahid of the Atwari police station demanded Tk 1000 for taking up the case but since he refused to pay the bribe, police did not even register his complaint.

Following a damage limitation exercise, officer-in-charge of the Atwari station Md Abdur Razzak said the case had in fact been filed, even if a bit belatedly on September 5 “according to the dairy that the victim had lodged on September 2.”
