Man arrested with 5kg gold at Ctg airport

Customs officials arrested a man along with gold bars weighing around 5kg at Shah Amanat International Airport in the port city on Wednesday.

The passenger, Md Gias Uddin, reached the airport on a US-Bangla flight from Muscat of Oman at 8:30 am, Assistant Commissioner of Airport Customs Mahbubur Rahman said. Acting on a tip-off, customs officials searched the luggage of Gias and found a total of 45 gold bars which were kept hidden inside it. The market value of the seized gold is approximately Tk two crore.

ACC sues 5 on graft charges

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Tuesday filed two cases against five people, including managing director of Regency Packaging Ltd and Regency Trims Ld Yogesh Kakar, over money laundering and tax evasion.

ACC Deputy Director Muhammad Shihab Salam filed the cases. Of the cases, one was filed with Dhanmondi Police Station against three people over laundering around 19.50 lakh while the other with Kalabagan Police Station for siphoning off Tk 44.79 lakh.

The accused in the first case are Yogesh Kakar and Regency Packaging Ltd and Regency Trims Ld director Ruby Kakar, and overseas payment and investigating officers of HSBC bank Ahmed Habib, Sohag Chakma and Tahmim Hasan. According to the case statement, the accused siphoned off Tk 19.50 lakh illegally evading tax.

The accused in the 2nd case are Yogesh Kakar, Ahmed Habib and Sohag Chakma. According to the case statement, the accused siphoned 44.79 lakh off the country through illegal channel. Sayam was killed in a fatal road accident in Cox’s Bazar on September 6, 2011, the release added.

5,532 cases filed for traffic rule violation

Traffic division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in their simultaneous drives on the city streets on Tuesday filed 5,532 cases against different modes of vehicles for traffic rule violation.

It also realised over 43.51 lakh as fine for traffic rule violation, said an official release.

Of the total cases, 338 cases were lodged for driving on wrong sides, 52 for using hydraulic horn, five for using hotter and beckon light and 10 others for using tinted glass. Police filed 2,557 cases against motorcycles and seized 130 others for violation of the traffic rules. Traffic police has dumped 48 vehicles and wrecked 912 others.
