Human hauler driver found dead

A human hauler driver was found dead at a banana orchard at Chakpalashi village in Rajshahi yesterday.

The deceased was identified as Jahangir Hossain, 35, son of Rajab Ali of Gandagohali village in the upazila.

Local people spotted the body of Jahangir with his hands and legs tied up and informed police, said Shakil Uddin Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Puthia Police Station.

On information, police recovered the body and sent it to a hospital morgue for autopsy.

The body bore several injury marks, said police.

Snatchers might have killed Jahangir in a bid to snatch his human hauler, said the OC.

Man drowns in Sylhet beel

A man drowned in Champa Khari Beel in Sylhet  on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Alauddin Miah, 42, a resident of Rajonpur village in the upazila.

Quoting family members, Nazmul Haque, officer-in-charge of Fenchuganj Police Station, said Alauddin went missing in the afternoon while fishing in the water-body.

After a frantic search, a team of divers from Fenchuganj Fire Service and Civil Defence recovered the body from the beel around 9pm.

11 held with hemp in Sylhet   

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in a drive arrested 11 people along with 140-gram hemp from Dakhshin Shurma upazila on Saturday night.

The arrestees are Abul Hossain Mia, 25, Syed Aziz, 28, Md Khairul Miah, 25, Shahadat Hossain Shuvo, 18, Md Shohel Alam, 28, Iran Miah, 34, Md Ferdous Ahmed, 25, Md Mobarak Hossain Selim, 25, Md Kazol Miah, 26, Jasim Uddin Sajib, 22 and Md Elim Ahmed, 23.

A team of RAB-9 conducted the drive in Bharthkhola Mosque Market area of the upazila headquarters around 8:30 pm and detained them along the hemp, said Md Moniruzzaman, senior assistant director of RAB-9.

The arrestees were handed over to Dakhshin Surma Police Station.

48 held in anti-narcotics drive

Police detained 48 people including 20 suspected drug peddlers from different parts of the city from Saturday evening to Sunday morning.

The law enforcers also recovered drugs from their possession, said a press release issued by the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) on Sunday.

Among them, 20 were warranted criminals, it said. Ansar member found dead    Police recovered the bullet-hit body of an Ansar member from Morkun area in Tongi on Saturday night.

The deceased was identified as Junayed, 25. The victim was deployed on-duty in a warehouse of National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB), said Sub-inspector Ashraful of Tongi Police Station. His colleagues suspected that Junayed might have committed suicide as they heard gun-shoot from inside the bathroom around 11 am and found the bullet-hit body inside it. On information, police recovered the body.

Two electrocuted in capital

Two persons including a schoolboy died after being electrocution in Gandaria and Jatrabari areas of the capital on Saturday.

The deceased were identified as Amanullah, 11, a fifth grader of Gandari Primary School and son of late Badal Ahmed of Sutrapur Natunrasta and Rony, 30, son of late Tobarak Hossain of Sanarpara area.

Amanullah came in contact with a live electric wire when he was sitting on a gas pipeline near his residence, said an eye witness Jahingir Alam.

Later, he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where the duty doctor declared him dead around 12 pm, said Sub-inspector Md Bachhu Mia of the hospital police camp. In another incident, the other victim Rony was electrocuted while he was repairing an internet connection on the foot-overbridge in Sonirakhra area of Jatrabari, said Nahid who witnessed the incident.
