7 BNP leaders held in Sylhet   

Police arrested seven local BNP leaders from a meeting near BNP office in Tahirpur upazila In Sylhet on Friday night on charge of planning sabotage.

The arrested BNP men are- Tahirpur upazila unit general secretary Ruhul Amin, joint secretary Mahbubur Rahman Chowdhury, publication secretary Sajidur Rahman, upazila Sramik Dal president Ferdous Alam, its general secretary Emdadul Huda, upazila BNP members Kamal Pasha and Nabab Hossain.

On information about a secret meeting, a team of police conducted a drive on the embankment of Bolai River behind the local BNP office while a group of BNP men was holding a meeting there around 9pm, making their 40th founding anniversary, said Chandan Kumar Dhar, officer-in-charge of Tahirpur Police Station.

Sensing the presence of police, around 40 BNP men jumped into the river and fled away, he said.

AL leader hacked dead

A leader of Kuwait unit of Awami League was hacked to death by miscreants at Zindabazar in Sylhet on Friday night. The deceased was identified as SM Abdul Ahad, 40, son of Haji Nur Miah of Munshibazar Karimpur Medeni Mahal in Rajnagar upazila of Moulvibazar district and organising secretary of Kuwait unit of Awami League.

He came to Sylhet from Moulvibazar on Thursday to attend a party programme.

Quoting witnesses, sub-inspector Faruk Ahmed, in-charge of MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital police camp, said a gang of miscreants attacked Ahad in front of City Market around10:30pmand hacked him indiscriminately, leaving him critically injured.

He was taken to the hospital where he was declared dead around11:15pm.

Mosharraf Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, said a team of police visited the spot and they are investigating the incident.

Infant found dead in Sylhet

Police recovered the body of an infant from behind the Napit Khal bridge in Kanaighat upazila in Sylhet on Friday morning.

The identity of the just born baby girl could not be known yet.

Locals spotted the body around 11:30 and informed police, said Md Nunu Mia, officer-in-charge of Kanaighat Police Station.

Later, police recovered the body and sent it to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.

Female school teacher electrocuted

A female school teacher was electrocuted at home in Baluabhata area of Badarganj municipal town in Rangpur yesterday, locals and officials said.

The deceased was identified as teacher of Holy Child Kindergarten School Fauzia Begum, 24, wife of Md Kamruzzaman, also a teacher of the same school in the municipal town.

The tragic incident occurred when Fauzia hurriedly came out of her bathroom with wet clothes while taking bathe at 9 am to save her mother who got an electric shock in the house. Fauzia saved her mother. But, she was critically injured after being electrocuted while saving her mother. Inmates of the house rushed her to Badarganj Upazila Health Complex where the physician Dr Abdul Hye Rubel sent her to Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH) for improved treatment.  “Fauzia breathed her last on way to the RMCH,” Dr Rubel said.

Journalist Shamsul Alam hospitalised

Shamsul Alam Belal, City Editor of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), is seriously ill and now undergoing treatment at the capital’s Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital following a heart attack.

 “Belal was first admitted to Ibn Sina Hospital, Dhanmondi as he fell sick on Friday evening. He was shifted to Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital today,” family sources said.

His family members have requested all to pray for his early recovery.
