266 foreign and 199 Bangladeshi artists taking part in the exhibition

18th Asian Art Biennale Bangladesh kicks off tomorrow

The month-long ‘18th Asian Art Biennale Bangladesh 2018’ is set to kick off tomorrow on the premises of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) in the capital’s Segun Bagicha area. Organised jointly by Cultural Affairs Ministry and BSA, the exhibition is taking place at the National Art Gallery of Shilpakala Academy. Director General of BSA Liaquat Ali Lucky informed that a jury panel comprising five members with two from Bangladesh and one each from France, India and Spain has selected the artworks, which will be displayed at the 18th Asian Art Biennale. The jury board has also selected best artworks for three grand prizes and six honourable mention prizes.

President Abdul Hamid is scheduled to inaugurate the exhibition as the chief guest tomorrow and distributed the awards among the winners. Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor will be present as special guest while Professor Emeritus Tetsuya Noda, observer of 18th Asian Art Biennial Bangladesh 2018, will be the guest of honour on the occasion.

Chaired by Cultural Affairs Ministry Secretary Nasir Uddin Ahmed, chairman of the jury board artist Shahabuddin Ahmed will announce the name of the award winners, while Liaquat Ali Lucky will deliver welcome speech at the inaugural ceremony.

The exhibition will showcase the artistic heritage and contemporary aesthetic trends of Asia. Two and three-dimensional artworks such as painting, prints, photography, sculpture, installation, performance art and new media art will put on display at the month-long exhibition.

Running from September 1 to 30 at the National Art Gallery of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, open to all everyday from 11am to 8pm, the exhibition is hosting around 583 artworks by 266 foreign artists and 199 Bangladeshi artists. Among the 266 foreign artists, 223 have come under competition and 29 are under special invitation, along with 14 performance artists. Among the 199 Bangladeshi artists, works by 107 artists are under competition, while works by 63 artists got special invitation. In addition, 16 local performing artists will display their works at the biennale along with the work of 13 master painters.

A total 68 countries, including Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Afghanistan, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, The Philippines, The United States of America (USA), Mongolia, Peru, Stein, Italy, Ireland, Egypt, Kenya, Turkey, Ukraine, Iran, Moscow and Germany are participating in the event.

On the occasion of 18th Asian Art Biennale Bangladesh, a press conference was held yesterday in the seminar room of BSA, where Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor, Cultural Affairs Ministry Secretary Nasiruddin Ahmed, and Fine Art Director of BSA Ashrarful Alam Paplu were present, among others. Liaquat Ali Lucky presided over the press conference.

In addition to the display of artworks and performances, two seminars, covering varied topics encompassing different styles and forms of art will be held on September 2 and 3 on the topics ‘Art and contemporary narrative’ and ‘Art pedagogy and promotion’.

The exhibition is the most prestigious and biggest art festival of Bangladesh as well as the oldest international art biennale event in Asia. From the beginning to 2014 the event was the platform only for artists of the Asian and Pacific region.

In 2017, the organising committee of the exhibition has decided to expand its glory throughout the world. As a result, artists from 55 countries from around the world had participated in the 17th edition. And this year’s number of participating countries rise to 67 including Bangladesh has broken the previous record.
