Programme to mark World Refugee Day

UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, will host two events in the capital today and June 28 marking the World Refugee Day that falls on June 20. An art exhibition with the title, ‘Art for Humanity: The Flight and Resilience of the Rohingya’ will be held on June 20-28 in collaboration with the Cox’s Bazar Art Club. A panel discussion with the title, ‘1971 Refugee Experience: Reflections on Past and Present’ will be held on June 28 in collaboration with the Bangladesh Liberation War Museum. Both the events will be held at the Liberation War Museum in the city.

Listed ‘criminal’ held with arms

Police in a drive arrested a listed ‘criminal’ along with arms at Belma in Ashulia of Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka on Monday night. The arrestee was identified as Khorshed Alam, 40, son of Samir Uddin of the area. Tipped off, a team of police conducted a drive in the area and arrested Khorshed , said Shahidul Islam, sub-inspector of Ashulia Police Station. He was taken to the police station, he said.

Girl missing as boat sinks

Sylhet: A teenage girl went missing after a boat sank in a water body in Mirapara in the city on Sunday. The victim was identified as Fatema Akhter Mili, 17, daughter of Babul Mia of Mirapara Evergreen Residential area. Fatema along with three of her friends went to a joyous boat trip at a water body around 5 pm, said sources at the local Fire Service and Civil Defence office. At one stage, the boat sank in the water body, but all of them accept Fatema managed to swim ashore. A team of divers from local firefighting unit rushed there and conducted the search operation.
