AL confident of winning Gazipur
mayoral polls

Following its overwhelming victory in the Khulna City Corporation (KCC) elections, the Awami League (AL) wants to adopt the same strategy for the upcoming Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) polls scheduled for June 26. The party has meticulously prepared to ensure victory for its mayoral candidate Jahangir Alam in the GCC polls.

As part of the strategy, the AL leadership has called upon Gazipur city unit leaders and workers to close ranks and work together for the party candidate’s success. Earlier, the High Court (HC) stayed the GCC polls for three months after a writ petition was filed challenging the election. The city election was scheduled to be held on May 15. Party insiders have said they are confident that their candidates would also win

the forthcoming GCC election.

The party will follow the strategy adopted in the KCC polls, they said without detailing the strategy.

To ensure victory, the AL has formed seven teams comprising central leaders led by joint general secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanok. These teams will work with the help of local unit leaders and seek votes for the party candidates.

Several central leaders of the ruling party have told The Independent that their candidates should secure win as the AL-led government has been performing commendably.

When contacted, AL presidium member Lt Col (retd) Faruk Khan said people would vote for the AL in any election. “There is no reason to vote for the BNP as it didn’t do anything for the people. Our party has done a lot of development work over the last 10 years. Like the KCC election, our candidates will also win in the Gazipur city polls,” he added.

Replying to a question over internal feud, Faruk Khan said: “There was no intra-party conflict in Gazipur city. Everything is fine. All leaders will work together for the party candidate’s victory.”

In a recent city programme, AL general secretary Obaidul Quader expressed hope that their mayoral candidate would also win the GCC polls as the people were happy with the development work of the government.

AL central leader SM Kamal said that Gazipur city residents would vote for the ‘boat’ (Nouka) symbol in the GCC polls because of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s huge popularity. “Besides, Gazipur is a base for party supporters. There is no chance for other party candidates to win,” he added.

However, some AL insiders think that intra-party feud may hinder the victory of the party candidate. They also think that if the party higher-ups fail to remove the internal conflict among the Gazipur city unit leaders, the victory of the ruling party candidate would be difficult in the ensuing city polls.

The AL-nominated Gazipur city unit general secretary, Jahangir Alam, expressed hope that he would get the party ticket for contesting the polls, while its president, Azmat Ullah Khan, said he would get the party nod to contest the city polls.

In the last GCC polls held on July 6, 2013, Gazipur city unit AL president Azmat Ullah Khan was the AL-nominated candidate, who was defeated by MA Mannan of the BNP. Jahangir Alam had contested the election as a rebel candidate at that time.
