Road crashes kill 47 in four days

At least 47 people were killed in road accidents in different parts of the country during the three days of Eid-ul-Fitr vacation and yesterday. Among them, 19 died yesterday, while 10 on Sunday, 14 on Saturday and the remaining 4 people died on Friday, the first day of the three-day Eid vacation. At least 11 people, including nine picnickers, were killed and 18 others injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a picnic pick-up at Dhalagachhi in Saidpur upazila on Sunday night, reports UNB.

Two of the deceased were identified as Komal Roy, 23, and Srikanta Roy, 24, while the identities of the rest could not be known immediately. Ashoke Kumar Paul, assistant superintendent of police (Sadar circle), said the Dhaka-bound bus collided with the pick-up heading for Nilphamari on the Saidpur Bypass around 10:15 pm, leaving nine people dead on the spot and 20 others injured.

Meanwhile in Noakhali, three people were killed in a head-on collision between a bus and a CNG –run auto–rickshaw at Rampur area on Soanimuri –Laksham highway under Soanimuri upazila in Noakhali yesterday, reports our correspondent.  

The deceased were identified as Rakib, 23,driver of the CNG, Mizan (31), his brother Md Belal (40), of the same upazila.

In another road crash in Magura, two members of a family were killed while five others were injured as a bus hit a three-wheeler at Kestopur area in Sadar upazila in the district yesterday, reports UNB. The deceased were identified as Mamtaj Ali, 42, and his daughter Sumaiya, 7, of Harispur village in Khalisha upazila. Officer-in-charge of Magura Police

Station Ilias Hossain said a Jashore bound bus hit a three wheeler around 3pm killing the father and his daughter on the spot and injuring five others.

In Jhenidah, road crash killed a motorcyclist as a microbus hit his vehicle in Arappur area of Jhenidah town around 12noon yesterday, adds UNB. The deceased was identified as Azizur Rahman, 40, of Kumrabaria village of the district.

Meanwhile, in Mymensingh, a female school teacher was killed and four others were injured in a road crash at Jhalua area on Mymensingh-Kishoreganj road in Nandail upazila of the district in yesterday afternoon, reports our correspondent.

The victim was identified as Aklima Akhter Ripa, 35, assistant teacher of Kishoreganj SB Govt Girls High School, police said.

The accident took place when a battery-run auto-rickshaw collided head on with a CNG-run auto-rickshaw, injuring five passengers of both the vehicles critically around 4.00pm, said Kamrul Islam Miah, officer-in-charge of Nandail Police Station.

In another road accident, a maid servant was killed at Shahbazpur area of Gouripur upazila in Mymensingh on Saturday afternoon.

The victim, Poly Akter, 15, was strangled on the spot when her scarf got tangled with the wheels of an auto rickshaw in which she was traveling, said Delwar Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Gouripur Police Station.

On Sunday in Tangail, a bus rammed into a motorcycle at Solla on Tangail-Bangabandhu Bridge road around 2pm, killing its three riders on the spot.

The identities of the deceased were not available. Sub-inspector of Bangabandhu Bridge (East) Police Station Nur-e-Alam said they seized the bus but its driver and his helper managed to flee.

In Cumilla, a woman was killed as a bus hit her at Kalakachua on Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Burichangupazila.

The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately. Officer-in-charge of Mainamati Highway Police Station Mahbubur Rahman said the bus dashed the woman around 1am, leaving her dead on the spot.

In another accident, Jewel Mollah, 35, a travel agency trader and son of Abdul Kuddus of Belbhuj area of Barura municipality, was killed as a microbus plunged into a roadside ditch in the early hours.

Officer-in-charge of Barura Police Station Azam Uddin Mahmud said after the accident, locals rushed the victim to Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

In Cox's Bazar, Babu Dey, 16, son of Niranjan Dey of Kuruskul union in Sadar upazila, was killed as a CNG-run auto-rickshaw hit him in the afternoon, adds UNB.

Locals said the teenage boy was smashed by the three-wheeler around 3:30pm, leaving him injured while the on-duty doctor at Sadar Hospital declared him dead after he was rushed there, said officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station Farid Uddin.

In Thakurgaon, two motorcyclists, Faruk and Kawsar of Parpugi village in sadarupazila, died on the spot as a minibus rammed their motorcycle at Mathurapur in the upazila headquarters around 3pm on Sunday, reports UNB. The accident also left another rider injured, witnesses said.

Meanwhile in Tangail, Farook Hossain (22), son of Joad Ali of village Gachabari under Madhupur Upazila was killed in a road accident on June 17, reports our correspondent.

In Chuadanga, a student of Al-din Medical College was killed and two others injured in a road accident on Court road at Rupchhaia cinema hall area in the town on June 17 at about 7pm, adds our correspondent.

The deceased was identified as Sagar Saikat Opu (21), a student of Al-din Medical College and son of Najimuddin of Courtpara in the town.

In Chattogram on Saturday, three members of a family were killed in a head-on collision between two buses in Sahgodi Nimtoli of Patiya upazila around 11am, reports UNB. The deceased were identified as Hridoy Ranjan Das, 70, a teacher hailing from Chiringa area of Cox's Bazar, his wife Basanti Das, 55, and their son-in-law Shibakar Das, 40. Hridoy and Basanti died on the spot and Shibhakar sustained severe injuries in the accident.

In another road crash, two people - Kiron Bala Das, 60, and Lutfur Rahman, 30, died when a bus hit a roadside tree after its driver lost control over the steering on Dhaka-Chattogram Highway at Shuklalhat in Barabkunda around at 11:45am.

Meanwhile, an unidentified woman was killed after being hit by a human-hauler while crossing Dhaka- Chattogram highway at Madambibirhat in Sitakunda upazila around 5pm on Friday.

In Manikganj, four motorcyclists were killed in two separate accidents on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway in the district, reports our correspondent.   

Two of them were killed at an accident near Juka area on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway under Ghior Upazila in the district on the day of Eid-ul-Fitr. The deceased was identified as Jahidul Islam, 21, son of Rafiqul Islam, and Abdul Momin, 22, son of Mahidur Rahman of Kella village of Baniajuri union under Ghior upazila.

In the other accident, two other motorcyclists were killed on Dhaka-Aricha high way at Mushuriya in Shivalaya upazila in Manikganj on Friday afternoon, a day before Eid-ul-Fitr. The deceased were identified as Poran Mia and his friend Pannan Mia. The accident took place at 3:30 pm when a bus of Eagle Paribah rammed them from opposite direction, leaving Poran dead on the spot while Pannan Mia died after being taken to the hospital.  

In Habiganj, the headmaster of a primary school was killed as a bus ran over him at Uttarbazar in Chunarughat upazila headquarters on Saturday noon. The deceased was identified as Didar Ahmed, 40, the headmaster of Badhberi Government Primary School in the upazila, reports UNB.

In Jhenidah, a motorcyclist was killed in a road accident on Magura-Jhenidah highway at Madhupur Pachmail area on Saturday noon.

The deceased was identified as Sohan, 15, son of late Liton Mondol of Paschim Ramnagar village of the district.

In Sylhet, an elderly woman died after being slipped off a human-hauler while getting down from it at Roypur in Kanigahat upazila around 6pm on Friday. The deceased was identified as Razia Begum, 55, wife of Jamsed Ali of Barochatul village of the upazila.

In Chandpur, hawker Saleh Ahmed (40), son of Abdul Bashar Miaji of Tamta area in Shahrasti upazila, was killed after falling off a rickshaw when a private car hit it around 6:30pm on Friday.

In another accident in Tangail, Sumi Akhter (20) wife of Jewel Rana of Akurtakurpara of Tangail town was killed in a road accident on Saturday afternoon, reports our correspondent

In Chattogram on Friday, two people were killed and 15 others injured in a head-on collision between two buses on Chattogram-Cox's Bazar road at Shahgodi Nimtal in Patia upazila, reports UNB.

Meanwhile in Gopalganj, a college boy who appeared in this year's Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination was killed and another injured when a bus ran them over on Dhaka-Khulna highway at Mandartala in Sadar upazila on Thursday night, reports UNB.

The deceased was identified as Dipankar Banik, 19, son of Bhupati Banik of Raghunathpur village in Sadar upazila.

In another accident in Tangail, one was killed while 25 others were injured as two buses had a head-on collision at Korni under Mirzapur Upazila on June 15, reports our correspondent.
