Record sedition case against CU teacher: Court

CHATTOGRAM: A court here on Thursday ordered Chawkbazar Police Station to record a sedition case against a Chittagong University (CU) teacher for his defamatory remarks about the Liberation War in his research paper, reports UNB.

Judge of Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Court-2 Abu Salem Mohammad Noman passed the order after former Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader Asaduzzaman Tanvir filed a sedition case against Anwar Hossain Choudhury, an associate professor of CU Sociology department and former assistant proctor.

According to the case statement, Anwar in his application seeking promotion attached an article published in an international journal terming the Liberation War a communal riot between Hindus and Muslims.

It also contains defamatory remarks about Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, plaintiff's lawyer Sheikh Iftekhar Saimul Chowdhury said.

Earlier on April 19, Anwar, also a pro-Awami League teacher, submitted his application to the department head along with a journal titled 'Religious Politics and Communal Harmony in Bangladesh: A Recent Impasse'.

A planning committee formed with senior teachers to evaluate the article felt embarrassed at the controversial remarks about the Liberation War and Bangabandhu.
