2 jail guards held with ‘hemp’

Police arrested two probationary prison guards ‘along with hemp’ from Kashiadanga area of the Rajshahi on Friday evening. The arrestees were identified as Golam Azam, 21 and Ferdous Rahman, 21, attached with Rajshahi Central Jail as probationary prison guards. Rabiul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kashiadanga Police Station, said police set a check-post at an intersection here and arrested the duo along with hemp while they were coming from Haripur area after buying it.

3 robbers held with arms

Member of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in a drive arrested three members of a robber gang while they were committing robbery in a bus on Dhaka-Chittagong highway in the port city Chittgaong on Thursday night. The arrestees were identified as Md Kabir Hosssain, 28, of Modhhobausia, Jewel Rana, 28, and Mahabub Sardar, 28, of Charchasi village under Gazaria Thana of Munshiganj district. On secret information, an elite force team conducted a raid on the highway and arrested them red-handed when committing robbery in Bhoberchar area. The team recovered a one-shutter-gun, six rounds of bullet, a Chinese axe, a knife and a GI pipe from their possession, said Rab-11.

Discussion on birth anniv of Fatema (A) held

Iran Cultural Centre in Dhaka and Zahra Association, Bangladesh on Friday jointly organised a discussion programme marking the birth anniversary of Hazrat Fatima Zahra (A.) and International Women’s Day. The programme titled ‘International Women’s Day and Status and Rights of Women in Islam’ was held at the Convention Hall ‘71 of Daffodil International University. Head of department of law of Daffodil International University, Professor Farhana Helal Mehtab, said the issue of women in Islam is a topic of ‘great misunderstanding’ due to lack of adequate knowledge. She said that Islam had given true and due rights to women some 1400 years ago when there was ignorance and darkness in the society.

6 lakh shrimp fry seized

Members of Bangladesh Coast Guard in a drive seized some 6 lakh shrimp fries from Nahalganj Ferrighat area of Sadar upazila in Barisal on Friday morning. Six people were also fined over the seizure of the fry. Coast Guard members with the help of upazila fisheries office conducted the drive in the Kalabadar River and seized two trawlers along with the fry and detained six people, said Upazila Fisheries Officer Sanjib Sanyamat. Later, executive magistrate Nazmul Hossain fined the six detainees Tk 4,000 each, and released the fries in the river, he said.
