3 more killed in Sylhet stone quarry mudslide

Just three days after the death of 5 people in a mudslide while extracting stones from a hillock in Companiganj of Sylhet, three more workers were killed and one got injured on Wednesday night in a similar incident in the same upazila.

With the latest deaths, a total of 52 people have died in stone quarry related accidents in the country during the last 13 months.

The deceased were identified as Kasa Mia, 45, Jahir Hossian, 36, and Afaz Uddin, 35 while the injured as Abdul Gani, 55.

One worker was killed on the spot while two others went missing and another was injured in the mudslide as they were extracting stones. Later, police and fire service men recovered the bodies of the two missing, Jahir and Afaz, around 1:30am yesterday, said Companiganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mohammad Abul Lais.

Earlier on Sunday, five workers were killed and three others injured as the mud of the stone quarry collapsed on the workers at Bholaganj quarry in the same upazila.

All the five workers killed in the stone pit on Sunday’s incident hailed from Sunamganj. They were extracting stones by operating generator on the fateful day.

On January 23, six people were killed and later 13 died in six separate incidents including three more deaths on February 10.
