RU BCL men beat up 16 students

RAJSHAHI: Leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League of Rajshahi University unit on Tuesday beat up at least 16 students of the University for their alleged involvement with the politics of Islami Chhatra Shibir, student wing of the Jamat-e-Islami, reports UNB.

Among the sixteen, nine including three in critical conditions were sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for treatment, said Sahadat Hossain, officer-in-charge of Motihar Police Station.

The injured are identified as Shahriar Tanjim and Rahmutallah, first year students of Islamic History department, second year student of the same department Abdul Kader, Management department first year student Md Yakub, International Relation first year student Arifur Rahman, Linguistic department second year student Mizanur Rahman and Islamic Studies masters’ students Tuhin. The condition of Tuhin, Kader and Yakun is critical.

Sources said a group of BCL men led by President Golam Kibria and General Secretary Faisal Ahmed Runu held sixteen students including seven fresher while they were holding a group discussion on the Central Shaheed Minar premises at4:30pm. Later they forcibly took them to room no 231 of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall of the university, spreading panic among other students.

Confining the students inside room no 321 for more than two hours, they beat them with iron rods and pipes. Loud screaming was heard from the room, witnesses said.
