Nation pays tribute to language heroes

The nation yesterday paid tribute to the memory of the martyrs of the historic Language Movement by observing the 66th anniversary of Language Martyrs' Day, which is also recognised as International Mother Language Day around the globe.

All roads in the capital met at the Central Shaheed Minar, with people from all walks of life paid homage to the language martyrs.

President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury, Opposition leader Rowshan Ershad, Cabinet members, chiefs of the three armed forces and ambassadors of various countries paid their tribute at the Shaheed Minar. Various political and cultural organisations were also present.

The President was the first to pay tribute at the Central Shaheed Minar. Next, the prime minister paid her tribute. After this, the Shaheed Minar was opened for common people.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages on the occasion.

The mayors of Dhaka North and South City Corporations, freedom fighters, Dhaka University (DU) vice chancellors, DU Teachers' Association and DU Journalists' association also expressed their respect to the memory of the martyrs.

After that, political parties paid their tribute at the alter. BNP leaders  paid their tribute at the Shaheed Minar at 6am.

People started to gather around the Shaheed Minar premises from 5:30am. The number of people continuted to rise as the light became brighter to usher in a new day.
