Bill placed to relieve sugarcane growers from paying road tax

A bill titled, ‘Sugar (Road Development Cess Ordinance) (Abolish) Bill, 2018’, was placed in the Parliament yesterday to repeal the existing ‘Sugar Road Development Cess Ordinance’, aiming to relieve the sugarcane growers from paying taxes for development of roads in sugar mill catchment areas, reports UNB.

Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu placed the Bill and it was sent to the respective Parliamentary Standing Committee for further examination for two weeks.

The original law was promulgated through ordinance in 1960.

Roads in the sugar mill areas are constructed and maintained by different government departments, agencies and local

government bodies, making the 1960 ordinance

dysfunctional.

So, the government has decided to repeal the law, according to the proposed law.
