450 cartons cigarette seized

Customs intelligence personnel seized 450 cartons of contraband cigarettes, worth about Tk 27 lakh, from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital.

"We seized three luggage containing 450 cartons of foreign cigarette including 303 brand cigarette of the US in an abandoned condition from GreenChannel area of the airport around 12 noon on Thursday," director general (DG) Dr Mainul Khan customs intelligence said.

The estimated cost of the seized cigarette is Tk 27 lakh, he added. A case was lodged to this end.

Educational tools distributed

Some 100 primary students coming from poor and extreme poor families in Rajshahi city received education equipment like schoolbag, Tiffin-box, notebook, pen and pencil free of cost.

Brac distributed the tools in association with its ‘Urban Development Programme’ at a function in the conference hall of Rajshahi City Corporation here on Wednesday.

The educational appliances will help the students conducting their regular schooling and institutional learning.

Brac Regional Coordinator Farzana Parveen told the function that around 53,000 people of 12,500 households living in different slum areas in the city are getting time-fitting tools of improving their living and livelihood condition for reducing multi- dimensional poverty and deprivation under the urban development programme.

Man killed in road accident

A truck driver was killed in a road accident in Salna area of the Gazipur district on Thursday yesterday morning. The deceased was identified as Enayet Hossain, 40.

Police said the accident occurred on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway when a truck hit another standing truck, leaving its driver Eanyet dead on the spot.

Enayet was repairing his truck in the area, police said.

Programmes to observe ‘Amar Ekushey’ in Rangpur

RANGPUR:  The district administration have taken elaborate programmes to observe the ‘Amar Ekushey and International Mother Language Day-2018’ in a befitting manner here on February 21.

"The programmes were finalised at a meeting held at conference room of the Deputy Commissioner on Monday last with Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Wahiduzzaman in the chair," Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Ruhul Amin Mian said.

The observance will begin at one minute past after midnight on February 21  through placing wreaths at Central Shaheed Minar here to pay due respect to Language Movement Martyrs.  

Mayor of Rangpur Mostafizur Rahman Mostafa, Divisional Commissioner  Muhammad Kazi Hasan Ahmed and Deputy Inspector General for Rangpur Range of Bangladesh Police Khondker Golam Faruk will place wreaths there.
