Over hundred BNP, Jamaat men held

More than a hundred BNP activists were arrested yesterday after chase and counter-chases took place between them and law enforcers at several spots that came under the tour- route of BNP chief Khaleda Zia.The BNP chairperson left her Gulshan residence for Sylhet by road around 9:15am to offer fateha at the shrines of Hazrat Shahjalal (R) and Hazrat Shah Paran (RA) as a special court here is set to pronounce its verdict on Thursday in a graft case against her. Most of the incidents of chase, counter-chases took place when BNP activists converged along roads Khaleda took on her way to Sylhet. The activists, while greeting Khaleda, got involved in scuffles with the law enforcers at several points.

In Narayanganj, 10, including city unit BNP’s vice-president Sakhawat Hossain Khan were held. They were later sent to jail by a Narayanganaj court. Sakhawat and three others were held from Siddhirganj Sanarpar area on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway while they brought out a procession. A clash broke out between the police and BNP men, led by international affairs secretary of BNP central committee Nazrul Islam Azad, at Panchrukhi on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway. Police fired several blanks to disperse the BNP men and arrested 6 from the spot.

Elsewhere, 50 BNP-Jamaat men were held from Chandpur, 13 from Brahmanbaria, 22 from Jhenidah, 11 from Laxmipur, and 3 from Sirajganj on charges of creating anarchy yesterday.
