Stocks see moderate fall

Stocks showed moderate fall yesterday after the previous session’s sharp fall as panicked investors went on selling spree.

Merchant bankers and stockbrokers alleged that a ‘political rumour’ spread by a vested quarter created panic among the stock investors, prompting them to go for disposing of shares.

The country's premier bourse saw its biggest fall in four and a half years on Sunday. The DSEX, the benchmark general index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange, shed 133.15 points -- or declined 2.21 percent -- to close the day at 5,888.29, the lowest in three months on the day.

The broader DSEX of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) lost 18.51 points to reach at 5,869.79 yesterday and showed erratic movements as well. Index started with positive movements by gaining some points, but fell sharply by losing around 130 points within 11am.

The blue-chip DS30 also followed the same trend with 0.29 point down at 2,191.30. But the Shariah DSES

closed the day slightly up at 1,377.22.

The day's trade value at DSE rose to Tk 440.43 crore from Sunday's Tk 364.91 crore and the daily trade increased to 11.63 crore shares from 11.09 crore shares of the previous session.

Out of 335 traded issues, 186 incurred loss when 111 closed with some gains. The mutual funds also experienced a bad day, with 12 funds ending lower against only five gaining scrips.

The gaining issues were Islami Insurance, Salvo Chemical, Libra Infusion, Summit Alliance Port and MTB while the losing securities were Progressive Life, United Insurance, Meghna Pet, DBH1STMF and Prime Finance.

The most active issues were Beximco Pharma, Square Pharma, Lanka Bangla Finance, GP and BRAC Bank.

The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) closed the day with downward trend with its major CASPI 88.96 points down at 18,130.29.

At CSE, 224 issues were traded. Of those, 66 closed higher and 136 closed lower when 77.90 lakh shares worth Tk 19.87 crore changed hands.

A total number of 93,605 trades were executed in today's trading session generating turnover of Tk 4,404.3 million with trading volume of 116.33 million securities.
