2 killed in separate ‘gunfights’

Two suspected ‘robbers’ were killed in two reported gunfights with policemen separately in Kushtia and Narayanganj yesterday. One of the deceased was identified Nazrul Islam (35) of Dudhghata village under Pirojpur union of Sonargaon upazila in Narayanganj while the other killed in Kushtia could not be identified immediately. Sonargaon upazila Officer in Charge Morshed Alam said Nazrul and cohorts were committing robbery in the Fuldi village. But the villagers sounded alert from a local mosque horn and the policemen on duty rushed to place. Sensing the presence of law enforcers the robbers opened fire on them. Acting in defence the police also fired back at the dacoits, ensuing gunfight which   left Nazrul dead.

In another incident at Mahishdanga area under Islamic University thana in Kushtia one robber was killed during a gunfight between police and dacoits. UNB adds: Md Ratan Sheikh, officer-in-charge of the Islamic University Police Station, said on secret information that a gang of robber was preparing for committing robbery, a team of police conducted a drive around 3:30am. Sensing presence of police, the robber gang opened fire on the law enforcers, prompting them to retaliate, triggering a gunfight.

After 30 minutes of gunfight, police rescued the robber as bullet injuries. Later, the injured was rushed to Kushtia General Hospital where doctors declared him dead. Sub-inspector Md Rashedul Islam and constable Md Ahadul Islam received injuries during the gunfight. Police also recovered a pistol and a gun from the spot.
