Attack on police won’t be tolerated, says PM

Blasting BNP for launching attacks on police on Tuesday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday warned that the government will not tolerate such attack anymore, reports UNB.

"We won't tolerate such act in future," she said.

The prime minister issued the warning at her official residence Ganabhaban after adorning newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammad Javed Patwary with the IGP rank badge.

She said the law enforcement agencies have been playing a strong role in maintaining the law and order. "Even their members are sacrificing their lives in protecting people's lives and property."

Sheikh Hasina also sought cooperation of the country's people to uproot terrorism, militancy and drug menaces. "We want to root out terrorism, militancy and drugs from the country and we want people's cooperation to this end," she said.

She said police performed many tough responsibilities in the country, seeking people's cooperation so that country's development continues.

After adorning him with the rank badge, the Prime Minister greeted the IGP by presenting a bouquet.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan and outgoing IGP AKM Shahidul Hoque were present on the occasion. Earlier in the day, Javed Patwary said since joining the police force, every day of his life has been a challenge for him.

Patwary said this during this during a farewell reception accorded to outgoing IGP AKM Shahidul Haque in the city's Police Headquarters.

He was also hopeful that everyone in the force would extend to him the same level of cooperation as they did to his predecessor. The new IGP drew light upon the positive reforms which left a positive impact on the police force, started under the leadership of ex-IGP Nur Mohammad, followed by Hasan Mahmud Khandakar and lastly, AKM Shahidul Haque.
