New CoU VC takes office

COMILLA: Prof Emran Kabir Chowdhury yesterday joined as the 6th Vice Chancellor (VC) of Comilla University (CoU). After joining his office, he placed wreaths at the mural of Bangabandhu and at Shaheed Minar on the campus. "The crisis that was created with academic programme due to the vacant post of the VC will be resolved soon," said the new VC while talking to journalists. The issues of pending salaries of teachers and employees have already solved, he said adding that admission procedure for 2017-18 session will be initiated very soon.

"I am seeking cooperation from all of you," he requested. The post of the VC earlier remained vacant for last 58 days after previous VC Dr Ali Ashraf expired on December 2, 2017.

Earlier on Tuesday, President Abdul Hamid, Chancellor of CoU, appointed Prof Emran as the VC for the next four years. Former PSC member Dr Emran Kabir was serving as a professor in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology department of Dhaka University.

18th convocation of AIUB Feb 3

The 18th convocation ceremony of the American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) will be held on the AIUB own campus at Kuril in the capital on Saturday, says a press release.

On behalf of the president Md Abdul Hamid and also chancellor of the university, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid will preside over the ceremony and confer the degrees to the graduating students.  Prof Abdul Mannan, chairman of the University Grants Commission, will be the special guest while US Ambassador to Bnagladesh Marcia S Barnicat will be the convocation speaker.

The chairman, AIUB Board of Trustees Ishtiaque Abedin and Vice Chancellor Dr Carmen Z Lamagna will also deliver their speeches on this occasion. A total number of 2675 graduates will be conferred degrees in this convocation. Chancellor Award (Gold Medal), Vice- Chancellor’s Award, Dr Anwarul Abedin leadership award and other academic awards will be given to deserving students for their excellence in academic performance, distinction and other extracurricular activities.

Int’l conference of JU science faculty ends

A three-day international conference titled ‘Recent Advances in athematical and Physical Sciences’ ended on Monday on the Jahangirnagar University (JU) campus.

The Mathematical and Physical Sciences Faculty of the university organised the conference at the faculty with a view to exchange recent advancement in education and researches in the field of mathematical and physical sciences. A total of 20 topics on recent innovation and research in the field of  mathematical and physical sciences were discussed at the three-day conference, which started on January 27. Besides, around 70 research papers of recent research works in the field of science were presented at the function. Around 250 researchers of different countries participated at the conference.
