Shapla, Salman bag coveted singles titles

Shapla Akhtar of Bangladesh Ansar earned the distinction of winning a triple crown in the Ruchi Shamsul Arefin Smriti 35th National Badminton Championship which concluded at Shaheed Shamsul Arefin Gymnasium in Pabna yesterday.

Shapla toppled reigning champion Elina Sultana of Bangladesh Army  21-15, 21-12 in the women’s singles final to complete her tripe crown.

Earlier Shapla pairing with  Dulali Halder defeated  Elina Sultana and Nabila Zaman of Army 22-20, 14-21, 23-21 in a fairly contested women’s doubles final. Shapla and Rahad Kabir Khaled won the mixed doubles title beating their teammates Ahasan Habib Parash and Dulali Halder 21-17, 21-18.

Men’s top seed Salman Khan of Sylhet became national champions for the first time when he came from behind to down Mohammed Minhaj of Ansar 19-21, 21-17, 21-12 in the men’s singles final.

The men’s doubles title went to  Rahad Kabir Khaled and  Jamil Ahmed Dulal who defeated Moazzem Hossain Ohidul and Moazzem Hossain also Ansar 21-11, 21-19.

Bessides the above mentioned five events,  Bangladesh Ansar lifted the overall team championship trophy with 18 points, while Bangladesh Army finished runners-up with nine points.

Bangladesh Olympic Association  senior vice-president, Anjan Chowdhury Pintu distributed prizes as chief guest.
