Selection of nat’l players not only based on BPL

Habibul Bashar Sumon

Habibul Bashar Sumon, member of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) selection panel, on Thursday said that they don’t consider players’ performance only in BPL in case of player’s selection criteria for the national team.

“We always provide chances to those players, who perform well in domestic tournaments. But the responsibility to capitalise that chance depends fully on individual player,” said Habibul Bashar, who works for the Khulna Titans as its consultant.Sumon also said that they keep their vigil watch on players and their performance at different level games of the domestic circuit. But he said that they always try to provide opportunity to the best performers of the domestic circuit tournaments and that the matter of availing the opportunity depends on players.

“Actually we always try to bring in the front line anyhow to those who perform well. But player has to justify his grits individually,” Sumon told reporters.

“In case of players’ selection we don’t focus only on BPL performance. Actually our vigil watch remains on players since six months to one year. But those players who perform well in BPL, it’s easier for them to perform at international stage. Our local players are getting chance to play with many more international players in BPL. But we do not see only BPL performance,” he added.

Citing the name of Ariful Haque, Titans consultant said that they pick the potential and best performers and give them chances to play in HP Team and Bangladesh A team.

“He is very impressive. We’ve seen some more players to perform in impressive mood,” the former captain said.

“Those, who did well in our selection process we give them, chance to play in HP and A Team. They have to do their work to improve them to the next stage,” he added.

He informed that they will sit with all after the conclusion of the Twenty20 tournament to discuss about the next international assignment.

“We are yet to sit. Actually, we’ll sit after the end of the BPL. Before the start of the training camp, players will get a rest for a week or some more days,” he said. “BPL is month-long tournament. Much labour has been done. So they will get a relaxation,” he also said.

“In the meantime, the players have matches of the National Cricket League (NCL). They have to play that game,” he added.

When asked about the hot-topic of the appointment of the head coach for the Bangladesh team, the selector said that the important thing is to realise the best thing from the coach whoever comes in Bangladesh.

“Whoever comes to Bangladesh as the head coach for the national team, all will be better. It will depend on how the players realise their things better from him or how easily they could adopt with him,” he viewed.
