200 mango trees burnt

Unidentified criminals allegedly burned around 200 trees at a mango orchard in Rajshahi University (RU) on Wednesday afternoon. Later, fire service personnel brought the situation under control. Nurul Islam, assistant director of Fire Service and Civil Defence of Rajshahi district unit, said being informed two firefighting unit rushed in and doused the fire around 6pm after two hours of efforts. Director of agricultural project of RU Prof Emran Hossian said unidentified miscreants had burned the 10 bigha mango orchard. A probe body will be formed by university authority in this regard, he added. RU Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Ananda Kumar Shah said a general diary was filed in this connection. Mehedi Hasan, officer in-charge of Motihar Police Station, said police are conducting drives to arrest the criminals.
