10 BNP men remanded
SAVAR:  A court here on Tuesday placed 10 leaders of different local units of BNP on one day remand in a case for subversive activities during the hartal-blockade programmes enforced by the BNP-led 20-party alliance after January 5. The BNP leaders are include its Dhaka district unit vice president Din Islam and its Savar upazila convener Golam Sarawar. Earlier on Sunday, the court sent them to jail when they surrendered before the court and sought bail in a case filed with Savar Police Station over subversive activities. As police filed a remand petition against the accused on Tuesday, the court placed them on one day remand. Following the order, the accused were brought to Savar Police Station from the jail for the remand.
Speaker to visit Pirganj today
RANGPUR: Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury will visit her constituency Rangpur-6 (Pirganj) today, local Awami League (AL) and official sources said. The Speaker will arrive at Dak Bungalow in Pirganj upazila town at 8:50 am by road from Syedpur Airport after arriving by air from Dhaka to take part in a number of programmes before leaving for Rangpur Circuit House on the same day. During her visit to Pirganj, the Speaker will inaugurate the newly built library of Pirganj Press Club through unveiling plaque at 10 am, visit Pirganj Press Club and exchange views with local journalists there. She will attend inaugural ceremony of the three-day Fruit Tree & Agriculture Technology Fair- 2015, to be organised jointly by upazila administration and Department of Agriculture Extension, at Pirganj upazila parishad premises as the chief guest at 11 am.
Youth electrocuted in Khulna
KHULNA: A young man died from electrocution at Lata village in Paikgachha upazila yesterday. The deceased was identified as Uzzal Biswas, 25, a resident of the area. Police said Uzzal died on the spot after he came in contact with a live electric wire while he was walking on a field in the area at about 8am.
DB arrests two arms traders
Detective branch (DB) of police yesterday arrested two alleged firearms traders from Ghoroa Hotel in capital's Motijheel area and recovered a foreign-made pistol from their possession. The arrestees Kabir Khan and Sazzadul Islam were picked up by police at 5.45 pm on Tuesday. The duo in the primary interrogation confessed that they are members of a firearms trading syndicate. A case has been lodged with Motijheel police station in this regard.
Indian wine seized in sylhet
SYLHET: Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in a drive seized Indian wine, worth Tk 1.70 lakh, from Nijorgram area under Madobpur upazila in the district on Tuesday night. Tipped off, a team of BGB battalion-55, conducted a drive in the area and recovered the Indian wine in a abandon condition. The BGB could not arrest anyone as the smugglers managed to flee sensing the presence of the border guards, says in a press release.
Man crushed under train
CHITTAGONG: An unidentified man was crushed under the wheels of a train at Sholoshahar area of Panchlaish thana in the port city yesterday morning. Police said the man aged about 31 was killed as he fell under the wheels of a running train near Sholoshahar railway station at 8am yesterday. However, detailed information regarding the accident could not be known immediately. Receiving information from the locals, Government Railway Police (GRP) recovered the body around 10am yesterday and sent it to the morgue for autopsy. An unnatural death (UD) case was lodged with railway police station in this connection.
