Kerry for progress on fire safety, bldg inspections

DHAKA, May 18: US secretary of state, John Kerry, has called for rapid progress on the issues of both fire and building inspections in the readymade garments sector in Bangladesh. During a meeting with foreign minister Dr Dipu Moni at the US state department on Friday, Kerry also urged Dhaka to ensure the quick passage of labour law amendments, said a media note issued by the department, after the meeting.

UK firms to be bound by new human rights policy

DHAKA, MAY 18: British companies setting up shop in Asian countries like India, China and Bangladesh will soon be bound by a new government policy to uphold safety and human rights of its workers. The "Business and Human Rights policy" is being finalised jointly by Britain's foreign and commonwealth office (FCO) and the department of communities, reports the Times of India online on Saturday.
