Seventeen years after the Law and Order Disruption (Speedy Trial) (Amendment) Act was enacted, the ruling Awami League (AL) is going to extend its life for five more years. In 2014, for the sixth time, the government had extended the tenure of the law which was first enacted by the BNP-Jamaat alliance government in 2002 with the aim of preventing “disruptions of law and order”. The AL, which was then in the opposition in 2002, had termed the law a “black law”.
