40pc hike in train fares likely
After three years, the government is planning to increase by 40 per cent passenger train fares and freight rates on an average. The plan, which is likely to come in effect soon, comes in keeping with the prescription of the donor agency, Asian Development Bank (ADB), with a view to adjusting the operational and maintenance cost of the state owned railways. The director general (DG) of Bangladesh Railway recently sent a proposal to increase train fares to the Ministry of Railways, seeking permission to raise fares from the existing 39 paisa per kilometre to 45 paisa, sources in the ministry Bangladesh Railways said.
