The Awami League’s (AL) mayoral candidate, Atiqul Islam, was unofficially elected in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayoral by-election held yesterday, receiving 8,39,302 votes from all 1,295 polling centres. Jatiya Party's Shafin Ahmed remained a distant second with a mere 52,429 votes in the same number of centres. In the election 31.05 per cent votes were polled. Returning Officer Abul Kashem announced the results at the result collection and announcement centre set up at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre around 1:30am on Friday.
