Single-digit lending rate still elusive
Despite government measures to bring down the interest rate on loans to single digits, the lending rate still hovers around 12–13 per cent, thereby scuppering the attempts made so far to shore up the banking system. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina herself has directed the bankers on April 13 to offer single-digit interest rates on loans in order to boost investment in Bangladesh. “Interest rates have to be slashed and they should be in single digits. Otherwise, investment will not accelerate, along with employment generation,” she said. But banks have failed to abide by the PM’s directive.
