The Dhaka district administration has identified 58 city canals that are mostly occupied by the government, NGOs and politicians.Most parts of 37 of these canals have been occupied by the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK), three canals by the government and seven canals by NGOs. The remaining 11 canals have been occupied by 248 political persons, sources said. Green activists have alleged that the RAJUK or government organisations responsible for protecting the canals cannot construct any structure by filling up the city canals.
