Catastrophic landslides kill 132
At least 132 people, including four army personnel, were killed and over 100 injured as rain triggered landslides and wrought havoc in Rangamati, Chittagong and Bandarban districts yesterday. This is the worst ever landslide in the country after June 11, 2007 catastrophe which claimed 127 lives. The death toll from yesterday’s disaster may rise further as many people, including some army personnel involved in rescue operations, were still missing, sources in Bangladesh Army and the Fire Service and Civil Defence said. Sources said the landslides struck the hilly districts from Monday midnight till Tuesday morning due to torrential rains. Bad weather is hampering rescue operations there.
