Uniform VAT takes centre stage
Enforcement of the Value Added Tax (VAT) and Supplementary Duty Act, 2012, from July 1 this year appears to be the main feature of the Tk. 4,00,266-crore national budget for the next fiscal year, which was unveiled by finance minister AMA Muhith yesterday. The widening of the VAT net also appears to be a major instrument for the execution of Muhith’s plan to earn Tk. 2,87,991 crore worth of revenue. The overall deficit stands at Tk. 1,12,275 crore, which is 5 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP).
