Sheikh Jamal edged out Mohammedan Sporting Club with a solitary goal win to move into semifinal when substitute Solomon King struck a late goal in the first quarterfinal of the Walton Federation Cup Football yesterday.
Held at the Bangabandhu National Stadium, after a goalless first half substitute Solomon King, who was replaced his compatriot Momodou scored the all important goal of the match to lead Jamal to the semifinal.
The match started with both the sides looked to share the possession evenly but gradually Jamal got better the Black and White and enjoyed better possession throughout the 90 minutes game.
Mohammedan produced the first move of the match with Nkwocha Kingsley receiving a ball entered into the box with a solo run but finally failed to beat Jamal’s newcomer goalkeeper Samiul Islam on fifth minute.
Jamal, who played in absence of their three regular players, Nurul Absar, Alauddin and Omar Faruque cropped up with a left side attack on 10th minute and Momodou was on target with a powerful right footer from outside the box but Mohammedan custodian Mamun Khan well-dived and gripped the ball.
But Jamal comprised with mostly a bunch of young booters went very closer twice to take lead but Raphael Odovin frittered away the easy chances while both times he found the Mohammedan keeper in one and one situation.
The first chance came to Raphael’s way on 26th minute when midfielder Mezbahul Manik floated a long ball over the defenders in an open space and the Nigerian forward got better with his pace and found goalkeeper Mamun as last defender but failed to beat him (Mamun).
Raphael just threw away the second chance in almost same fashion and this time also receiving a long ball in an open space ran faster than the defenders and had enough time to place the ball into far post or over the advancing keeper but he disappointed all taking the shot straight to the keeper on 29th.
After the goalless draw both sides made a fresh start and the match turned more lively than the first half with attacks from both sides, though this time also Jamal were better in ball possessions and could produce rare threat but a 77th minute goal from substitute Solomon King of Gambia to bring Jamal into semifinal.
Raphael, who could lead Jamal by 2-0 in the first half finally set up for Solomon to score the all important goal of the match to seal the victory for Jamal (1-0).
Solomon, who replaced Momodou, scored the goal with his first touch on a cutback of Raphael when he was left unmarked inside the box.
Mohammedan also had a good opportunity within two minutes of conceding the goal but from goal-mouth melee none of the players could push the ball into net.
