Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Annisul Haque yesterday reopened the Shyamali Shishu Park for the children which remained under lock and key since November 26 last year.
It was shut as the lease was not paying any fee to the corporation as per his agreement that he signed with the city corporation. It was reopened after the DNCC renewed the lease of the park with its operator Via Media Services on Thursday .The name of the park was also changed to DNCC Wonderland. There was no explanation as to why it renamed.
We have given the park back to its operator since they had the equipment installed there, Mesbahul Islam, chief executive officer (CEO) of the DNCC, told The Independent yesterday. Process is underway to appoint a consultant for the development of three other parks in Gulshan, Banani and Mohammadpur as we have received permission from the authority to provide the people especially the children to breathe and play in the open as early as possible, he said.
The Wonderland Children Park was shut by the DNCC following legal wrangles with its operator at the same time the Shyamali Shishu Park, depriving the children of the areas a primary source of entertainment in the open air.
Closure of Shyamoli Shishu Park hurt severely the low and middle class children of Shyamali and Mohammadpur, Dhanmondi and Mirpur depriving them of their only source of entertainment coming out of the chicken pen like flats as they live far away from the city’s only major Shishu Park at Shahbagh for nearly four months.
