Mayor Annisul seeks police protection

Special Correspondent

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Annisul Huq has sought police protection from the home ministry recently. DNCC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Md Mezbahul Islam sent separate letters to the home ministry and to the commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on September 1 requesting the authorities concerned for police deployment and to arrange for security for the mayor at his residence and whenever he is on the move.
However, the authorities took no apparent action into the matter prompting the DNCC authorities to send another letter to the home ministry on November 22.
In the letter, chief executive officer (CEO) of the DNCC Md Mezbahul Islam wrote, “The DNCC sent letters to the Home Ministry and commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on September 1 seeking required security to the mayor by deploying police force at his residence and during his movement. But, the authorities concerned are yet to provide any police protection to him as per the privileges a mayor enjoys.”
“It is necessary to enhance security for the mayor in the existing situation of the country considering terror threats to him,” the latter added.  A high official of the home ministry told The Independent on condition of anonymity that they have already asked the police department to provide police security to the DNCC mayor to ensure his security.
Annisul Huq, a former president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industries, was elected mayor to the DNCC on April 2015. As a DNCC mayor, he enjoys state privileges sanctioned for a minister.
