Vitamin A plus campaign tomorrow

“Children will be fed the vitamin A capsule at some 120,000 permanent health centres”

Over 2.10 crore children, aged between six months and five years, will be fed Vitamin A-plus capsules under a national campaign on December 10.
State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Jahid Malek came up with the announcement yesterday while talking to reporters at the secretariat. Children, aged between six and 11 months, will be given the blue coloured high-powered Vitamin A capsules, while children, aged between 12 to 59 months, will receive the red-coloured ones. The state minister said children will be fed the vitamin A capsule at some 120,000 permanent health centres across the country. “Three volunteers will work at each centre to make the campaign a success,’’ he said adding that the rate of children’s night-blindness in the country has come down below one per cent following the distribution of Vitamin A-plus regularly.
Besides, an additional 20,000 mobile centres will be set up at bus stands, railway stations, launch terminals, airports, ferry terminals, bridge toll centres and kheya ghats, and these will remain open from 8am to 4pm to make sure that all children are fed the capsules, he said.
The junior minister said the children of remote and impassable areas will be given the capsules from December 11-14 under special arrangements. Malek said Vitamin A also increases the immunity of children and reduce the complications of diarrhoea and measles. BSS adds from Chittagong: Nearly 13 lakh children under five years of age will be administered vitamin ‘A’ Plus capsules tomorrow in the city and district.
The campaign will begin from 8am and continue uninterruptedly till 4pm on National Vitamin ‘A’ plus campaign-16.
This was disclosed at a press conferences held at Civil Surgeon office by civil surgeon Dr Mohammad Azizur Rahman Chowdhury on Wednesday. CCC mayor A J M Nasir Uddin will formally inaugurate the day’s programmes on December 10 next. Over 700 supervisors including Commissioners of 41 wards in Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) and 2100 supervisors in the 14 upazilas of the district will supervise the ‘A’ Plus campaign. A total of 4,861 temporary vaccination centres will be set up by Chittagong Civil Surgeon office. Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) will set up 1,248 temporary centres in 41 wards to carry out the programme.
Over 20,000 volunteers and health workers including 4,848 by CCC would be engaged for giving vitamin ‘A’ Plus capsules to the children aged from zero to 5 years. Besides 1,500 volunteers and health workers in CCC area and 5,500 in the 14 upazilas in the district will carry out the drive in next four days from December 11 as a follow up programme through visiting doorsteps of the households to cover up dropped out children, CCC and civil surgeon office sources said.
