Many still suffering for want of drinking water, job oppotunities and medical facilities
OUR CORRESPONDENT

Aila victims have been still suffering for want of drinking water, job, medical facilities and dwelling houses at three unions in the coastal belt of Satkhira, seven years after cyclone Aila hit the country.
Cyclone Aila hit the country’s coastal areas on May 25, 2009 claiming many lives and damaging 1,742.53 kilometre stretch of embankment.
Localities badly affected by Aila are Gabura and Padmapukur unions in Shyamnagar upazila and Protapnagar union in Ashashuni upazila of Satkhira district.
At least 60,000 people of these three unions were rendered homeless after the cyclone.
Later, many Aila-hit people were served with dwelling houses by the government. But embankments at Kholisabunia, Kamalkati, Jhapa and Khola point on Kholpetua river are still at risk.
Many people have been still suffering for want of drinking water as there is no supply of sweet water in the saline water zone. So they have to depend on pond water for which they suffer from different water borne diseases.
Priya Mondol of Aksora village said she has to cross three kilometers to collect pure water.
Aslam sardar of Gabura village said people of Gabura union have migrated to different area for job as they have no opportunity of work there.
The land can only be used for shrimp farming. They cannot even go to forest in fear of robbers, he added.
Ali Azam Titu, chairman of Gabura union said at least one and a half lakh people suffer for want of medical facilities as there is no hospital there.
Shyamnagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abu Sayeed Mohammad Monzur Alam said this problem will be solved after the solar system water plant is completed.
People cannot rear cattle as there is no land for agriculture, said sources.
