Driver hacked dead
Meherpur: A human hauler driver was hacked to death by muggers on the Meherpur-Chuadanga road at Patkelpata on Friday night, reports UNB.
The deceased was identified as Nasir Uddin, 45, of Chandpur village in Sadar upazila.
Police and locals said a group of muggers intercepted the shallow-engine run human hauler (Algamon) on the road near Patkelpata passenger shade in the area around 8:30pm and hacked him with sharp weapons, leaving him injured.
Later, the snatchers managed to flee the scene along with the human hauler before the local people reached there.
Critically injured Nasir was taken to Sadar Hospital where he died around 9:30pm.
Fugitive convict held
Chapainawabganj: Police arrested a fugitive convict in a case filed under the Arms Act from Kansat Hallmor in Shibganj upazila on Friday, reports UNB.
The arrestee was identified as Abdul Mannan,29, of Koylabari area in the upazila.
Tipped off, a team of police conducted a drive in the area and arrested Abdul Mannan and recovered one pistol, one magazine and two rounds of bullet from his possession.
Mannan was convicted and sentenced 10 years of imprisonment in a case filed under the Arms Act.
2 held with contraband tablets
Benapole: Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested two alleged smugglers along with 14.7 lakh pieces of Indian contraband tablets at Kagojpukur in Sharsha upazila early yesterday, reports UNB.
The arrestees were Habibur Rahman, 26, son of Mojnu Ali and a resident of Palbari area in Sadar Upazila of the district, and Tariqul Islam, 24, son of Surab Jawlader and a resident of Old Kosba area in Sadar upazila.
Lieutenant Colonel Jahangir Hossain, commanding officer of 26 BGB said tipped off, a team of BGB challenged a Jessore-bound microbus at Kagojpukur around 12.30am.
Later, BGB members recovered 14.7 lakh pieces of Indian contraband tablets from the microbus and arrested the duo.A case was filed with Benapole Port Police Station in this connection.
86 families brought under  power network
JESSORE: Some 86 families of Patbari village near Benapole Land Port under Sharsa upazila of the district have been brought under rural electrification network by Sharsa Palli Bidyut Samity (SPBS), reports BSS.
Sheikh Afil Uddin, MP, formally inaugurated the electrification programme as the chief guest on Friday at a simple function held at the village.
Sharsa upazila chairman Sirajul Haque Manju, general secretary of Sharsa upazila Awami League Nuruzzaman and general manager of Sharsa Polli Bidyut Samity Monwarul Islam were present at the function, among others.SPBS brought the village under rural electrification network spending Tk about nine lakh.
