BID TO GOUGE OUT EYE for dowry

Woman hospitalised; 1 held

Our Correspondent, Mymensingh

A woman has suffered injuries after her husband tried to gouge out eye with a spoon following a family feud. The victim, Jinnat Fatema Runa, 23, who had been undergoing treatment at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital since early Monday, was referred to National Institute of Ophthalmology in Dhaka yesterday afternoon. Bulbul Ahmed, 35, of Gadumia village in Bhaluka upazila, attempted to gouge out the right eye of his wife Runa with a spoon following a feud over payment of dowry on Sunday night. The right eye of Runa has suffered a serious “Retinal detachment with vitreous hemorrhage”, said Dr Mohammad Habibullah, assistant professor of Eye Department at MMCH. Quoting family sources police said Runa, daughter of Abdur Razzaq Master of Randia village of the same upazila, got married with Bulbul four years ago. Runa has since been tortured by Bulbul over realisation of dowry. Runa brought  money from her parents on several occasions; but could not satisfy Bulbul’s greed , said Mamunur Rashid, OC of Bhaluka police. As Bulbul again put pressure on Runa for brining Tk100,000 on Sunday night, both involved in an altercation over the issue. At one stage, Bulbul allegedly attempted to gouge out Runa’s right eye with a spoon, said police. Victim’s brother Khalilur Rahman filed a case implicating four persons, including Bulbul. Police arrested Bulbul on Monday and sent him to jail.
