10 hurt in Sylhet clash
At least 10 people were injured in a clash between two groups of Swechchhasebak League, the volunteer wing of ruling Awami League, in Sylhet city on Monday noon. Witnesses said the district and city units of Swechchhasebak League brought out a joint procession at noon protesting the day-long hartal called by Jamaat-e-Islami. When the procession reached in front of Bandarbazar City Super Market, supporters of the two groups locked in a clash with several chases and counter chases taking place, leaving at least 10 people injured on both sides. On information, police rushed in and brought the situation under control.
86 held in special drives in Ctg
Police in overnight drives arrested 86 people, including four Jamaat-Shibir activists, from different upazilas of the district and Bakalia area of Chittagong city on Monday night. Mohammad Naimul Hasan, Additional Superintendent of Police (Special Branch) of Chittagong district, said they arrested 58 people including three Jamaat- Shibir activists and 55 accused in regular cases. Mohammad Mohsin, officer -in- charge of Bakalia thana, said Bakalia thana police arrested 28 people including a Jamaat-Shibir activist and 27 others in different cases. Police also seized 406 yaba tablets from Shah Amanat bridge area of the city during the drives.
600kg ‘jatka’ seized in Barisal
Bangladesh Coast Guard in a drive seized 600 kilograms of Jatka (small hilsa fish) from three launches in Sripur River in Barisal district on Monday night. Acting on a tip-off, a team of coast guard from Barisal halted three Dhaka-bound launches 'MV-Sundarban, MV-Jamal and MV-Jahid-4' and seized the Jatka searching the launches, said Zila fisheries officer Bimal Das. However, the fish traders fled the scene sensing the presence of the Coast Guard members. The seized Jatka was distributed among poor people and different madrasas and orphanages in the district this morning.
One held with yaba, hemp
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-8 in a drive arrested a drug trader from Kawnia thana area of Barisal city on Monday night. RAB also seized 102 yaba and 50 grams hemp from his possession. The arrested person was identified as Rahim Kholifa, 25. RAB sources said on secret information, a team of elite force arrested him with the drugs. A case was filed in this connection.
